A celebration of AKPsi Founders' Day in New York City and the Brooklyn Bridge. Brothers to Brooklyn is a celebration of unity, brotherhood, knowledge, service and integrity, bringing together brothers of Alpha Kappa Psi, the premier professional business fraternity, from around the world. It is a remembrance of the founding fathers of AKPsi, the "Brooklyn Four", who officially started the fraternity on October 5th, 1904. The weekend culminates in a ceremonial crossing of the Brooklyn Bridge every year.
The first Brothers to Brooklyn event was held October 3rd through 5th, 2008, in New York City. Over 35 student brothers, alumni brothers, pledges, and guests took part in the event. In 2010, brothers converged again to a professional event of expanded scope, as a panel of professionals representing companies like Ernst & Young and Citigroup imparted their knowledge and advice. Approximately 70 brothers, pledges and guests gathered and crossed the Brooklyn Bridge at sunset that evening, doubling in size in just 2 years.
Since 2010, Brothers to Brooklyn has been held annually in New York City. The 2013 edition will be held between Friday, October 4th and Sunday, October 6th, featuring the ceremonial Brooklyn Bridge crossing on Saturday, October 5th.
The Origins of Brothers to BrooklynThe Brooklyn Bridge was named a National Historic Landmark in 1964, but sixty years earlier it would become the stepping stone to take business to a new level. It was an iconic piece of the history of Alpha Kappa Psi as the Founding Fathers would walk home from New York University and discuss their business courses and have the idea to organize a business fraternity.
It was during the Celebration of Brotherhood at the AKPsi Convention in Washington D.C. in 2007, that a brother would tell a story that would inspire many others. He told us about the annual celebration of the brothers of the Alpha Chapter at New York University Founders’ Day where the brothers meet in the University Square before the dawn and walk to the Brooklyn Bridge to recreate the walk of the Brooklyn Four. They sit in silence as they await the sunrise, as the rays begin to fall on them they feel the blue and gold rush through their veins; they look at each other and "know it was the best decision they've ever made in their lives."
This story of the Alpha Chapter lives on in the hearts of the Brothers around the world. Whether they cross the Brooklyn Bridge on October 5th, or another day, it is the AKPsi spirit that brings them together... a brotherhood that is more than business.
